1940's Hair, Boards For Portfolio

I researched into the 1940s hair making links to other designs and stylists etc.

I then created a graphic concept board relating to 1940s hair and where i am going to take this project, from the research.

I created a line up using my most successful designs, using a simple layout for effect.

I created a colour and  fabric board using the fabrics and colour scheme i want to use in my final design. I have suggested the colour in my illustrations.

I then created a development board, from my final illustration to the designing and making, and the final shoot and garment. This is not complete yet, as i wish to annotate on the photographs about the production process. I will do this by using hand rendered typography and scanning it back into photoshop.

Concept Board

My Concept board: i used the pen tool to cut out conceptual parts of images relating to my inspiration, which was 1940's Hair. I included typography that related to my concept, and i explained what my concept was about. Overall i included images that were quite feminine and showed how the 1940s hair were so intricate and curvy.

photoshop techniques for research board

This is what i created on photoshop using Joel Peter Witkin's image, and an image of hair underneath it.
I experimented with the layers so i got different techniques and outcomes, i thought this was quite effective, it sets a sinister mood.

Research Board

I have created a research board for my hair project on photoshop, i have scanned in various images from my sketchbook and included it to this board.

First i started researching random information about hair, like designers and hair through the decades.
I looked at several stylists and tried recreating them in my samples, i also made my own paper hair inspired by steven carey.
Hair doesn't have to be the only thing i sample with, but hair accessories can be used with in a sample too. This texture can be used inspired by hair nets.
Using this as a refence i created a sample inspired by this by having black fabric with hair wrapped in a circle overstitched down and cut out the centre. I think this would be very effective on a garment especially with netting as i have tried.
I also looked at the stylist Myesha Abel, which has unusual hairstyles and created samples from them.
I really like this sample using the hair and curving it round and sewing it down on the edge. This would be very effective if there were loads of this on a garment but oerlapping.

Anna schwamborn made mourning jewellry from hair and cremated ashes. I think the mood of her work is quite dark so i linked in Joel Peter Witkins work who i have throughout my sketchbook.

From the fur dress below, it reminded me of a film i watched in Contexual studies called 'furr' about a man with a over growing hair condition, Trichrosis. So i did some research on that.

I researched (primary and secondary research) about hair. i documented the trip to the hair department at James Watt campus and what i seen and explained the reasons of hair.
I gathered primary reserch on plaits, french plait, normal plait, how to create hairstyles with plaits etc

I really like this page, i have developed my samples, created garment designs from my samples and research and i have used photoshop to create samples by cutting out my samples. I also linked this into Joel Peter Witkin.
After reseaching many different artists, designers and stylists i have compared a few, i have explained their differences and simularities.
The theme of our garment was meant to be linked into Contexual studies, where we learnt about dark, sinister and macarbe themes. I created these pages because it gives my sketchbook a dark vibe to it. These images are disturbing due to Joel Peter Witkin's experiences in his childhood. His works are weird which links back to wearing hair is 'weird'.
This is where i started thinking about my concept more. I was getting a feel for 1940s hair because their hairstyles were intricate and detailed. I created this image on photoshop by merging two images of 1940s hair together to create this weird looking picture.

I researched 1940s hair in more depth.

In textiles we were learning different techniques such as knitting. I developed my sample by using the pearl knit then i went back to the basic knit and included hair into it. To develop it even further i created a sample of knit using hair. Using photoshop i scanned the sample in and created a garment from it.

Now i started using my research pictures and samples to create designs.

We experiemnted and developed draping on the stand.

Another illustation technique is montage i used various peoples hands and limbs and samples to create clothing designs with the samples.

In photoshop i created a part of a garment i really adored. i scanned in the twisted plait and cut out the top of the garment , on the second idea i reduced them in size to create two small boobs.
I really adore my final design which i created on photoshop layering up all the samples.

Knitting

Knitting is a process that turns a yarn or fibre into a cloth or garment. Knitting consists of rows of hoops on the needle called stitches. The fabric extends once the process of pulling a hoop through an existing hoop and repeated to create a garment.
Knitting can be done by hand or by machine. Depending on how thick or thin the needles are, it depends on how loopy or tight the fabric is.
